Certificate in Counselling
Course Description
The Certificate in Counselling programme is designed to equip students with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and ethical foundations required for an effective counselling profession. The course covers theoretical frameworks, practical counseling techniques, ethical considerations, and various evidence-based interventions for preparing students for a range of counselling engagements. Students will thus be adequately equipped to serve as Lay Counsellors, and also be educated to gain relevant skills making counselling referrals and follow-ups where applicable.
Programme Outcome
The skills and knowledge acquired in this certificate programme will be useful to anyone who has a personal or professional interest in practicing counselling in their personal, social and/or professional life. These skills are beneficial to a wide spectrum of people who desire to be lay Counsellors, as well as those in other professions who apply counselling skills in their fields of work.
Target Audience and Entry Requirements
This programme is ideal for individuals seeking to embark on a career in counseling, as well as professionals in related fields looking to enhance their counseling skills for practice. Prospective student should possess at least an SHS or equivalent certificate, and be able to read, understand and write in English.
Certification and Licensing
Certification and Licensing Upon successful completion, students will be awarded a Certificate in Counselling by TUCEE Institute, acknowledging their readiness to provide mental health support to clients as Lay Counselors. Each student will subsequently be licensed as a Lay Counsellor after fulfilling all procedures and processes for licensure with Ghana Psychology Council (GPC), which is the regulatory body of Counselling practitioners and other mental health professionals in Ghana.
Programme Delivery
This programme will be delivered mostly via online interactive tutoring sessions (i.e. on zoom). It will also involve group work, online discussions, peer teaching and practicum (role play) sessions.
Programme Duration
The Certificate in Counselling programme will last for 8 months, 6 months intensive lectures, 2 months practicum.
